Important: Viscose Rugs Require Specialized Care

Viscose (also called art silk, rayon, or banana silk) is one of the most challenging fibers to clean. Many professional cleaners refuse to accept viscose rugs because improper cleaning causes permanent, irreversible damage including water spots, fiber distortion, and loss of sheen.

At Premier Rug Cleaning, we specialize in these challenging cases. Our technicians are trained in viscose-specific cleaning methods that protect your investment while achieving the best possible results.

Why Viscose Rugs Need Expert Care

Viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber made from cellulose (wood pulp). While it has a beautiful silky appearance and soft feel, it's extremely sensitive to water and cleaning chemicals. The fiber structure weakens significantly when wet, making it prone to damage during the cleaning process. Learn more about our specialty fiber cleaning services.

Unlike wool or synthetic fibers that can withstand aggressive cleaning, viscose requires a delicate balance of moisture control, pH-neutral solutions, and rapid drying. Too much water causes permanent water spots. Wrong pH causes dye bleeding. Slow drying leads to mildew and fiber deterioration.

Our facility is equipped with climate-controlled drying rooms and specialized equipment specifically designed for these challenging fibers. We've successfully cleaned thousands of viscose rugs that other cleaners refused to touch. We also offer fabric protection to help prevent future stains.

Viscose Rug FAQs

Common questions about viscose rug care

Viscose rugs have a silky sheen and smooth feel. They're often sold as "art silk," "banana silk," or "bamboo silk." The fibers are smooth and straight, unlike wool which has crimp. If you're unsure, we can identify the fiber during our free inspection. Check your rug's label—if it says rayon, viscose, or art silk, it requires specialized care. See our specialty fiber cleaning page for more info.

Most viscose rugs can be cleaned, but success depends on the quality of the rug, dye stability, and existing condition. Some very low-quality viscose rugs or those with severe existing damage may not be good candidates. We provide an honest assessment during inspection and will let you know if cleaning is not recommended. For heavily damaged rugs, we also offer rug repair services.

Viscose is notoriously difficult to clean. Without proper training, equipment, and techniques, it's easy to cause permanent damage including water spots, color bleeding, and fiber distortion. Many cleaners simply don't want the liability. We specialize in these challenging cases and have the expertise and equipment to handle them safely.

We strongly advise against it. Home cleaning methods—including steam cleaning, DIY spot treatments, and rental machines—almost always cause irreversible damage to viscose rugs. Even professional carpet cleaners using portable equipment can damage these delicate fibers. Viscose requires specialized facility-based cleaning with controlled drying. Contact us for professional help.

Blot immediately—never rub. Use a clean white cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Do not apply water or cleaning products. Contact us as soon as possible for professional treatment. Quick response is critical for viscose rugs, as stains can set quickly and become permanent.
